Dorothy Jean Brooks

Dorothy Jean Brooks, age 89, passed away on March 3, 2014 of natural causes at Angelcare Acres in Harlingen.
She was born on December 17, 1924 in Sebastian to Charles Albert Barnes and Emma Mae Hutchins.  She attended Mercedes High school and worked at the State Movie Theater. When she graduated she began working for the telephone company as a switchboard operator.  She later went to live in El Paso with her brother, Charles and sister-in-law Reamy, where she worked and later met Milton Brooks.  They married on June 29, 1946 and moved back to the valley. Milton was a printer, musician, and a Bronze star recipient from the Army.  Dorothy worked as a bookkeeper for the Sportsman for many years and later as a bookkeeper for a dentist office. Milton and Dorothy also owned a gift store and printing company called Brooks & Brooks in Harlingen.  She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a son, George Brooks; grandchildren, Martha Lange (Paul), Robert Brooks, Heather Brooks, and Alex Brooks; great grandchildren, Adrian, Amy and Ainsley Lange; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Previously deceased were her parents Charles Albert Barnes and Emma Mae Hutchins Barnes; husband, Milton Brooks; son, Robert Brooks; brothers, Charles Barnes and Sammy Barnes; sisters, Margaret English Barnes Bates and Nan Barnes Voorhes Miller.
The graveside service will be held at Mont Meta Memorial Park on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 1:00 p.m.
The family would like to thank the entire Angelcare staff for their unending love, patience and care for our sweet Dorothy.
She was a kind-hearted, gentle, loving person.  She will be missed!
