Doris Jean Potts Lister went to be with our Lord and Savior on September15, 2024 at the age of 95. She was born in Pharr, Texas on May 9, 1929, to Dallas and Inez Potts.
Doris spent her early years working in the millinery alongside her aunt in New Orleans. She furthered her education by attending business school in New Orleans.
Her path crossed with that of her future husband during a blind date when he was stationed at the air base in Harlingen, Texas, while she worked as a civilian employee there. They united in marriage on April 2, 1954, in Harlingen. Over the years, their family grew with the addition of their daughter, Laura, followed by their son, Frederick “Freddie,” five years later.
Throughout her married life, Doris dedicated herself to being a devoted mother and engaged in various volunteer activities, including the Harlingen Garden Club, the Red Hat Society, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her commitment to her community and church was evident as she served on various committees at the First United Methodist Church, where she was a lifelong member.
Doris is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Fred, and her son-in-law, John Chappell. She is survived by her younger sister, Pat Mullen of Statesboro, GA; her daughter, Laura of Cypress, Texas; her son, Fred of Austin, TX; and her two grandchildren, Clare of Tomball, TX and Colin Chappell of Austin, TX.
A small family memorial and burial will take place at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, where Doris will be laid to rest beside her husband.
