Doris Knight

June 10, 1936 — June 8, 2024

Houston, Texas

Doris Ann (Nash) Knight, 87, of Houston, Texas, passed away on June 8, 2024, at The Rehab Suites at Magnolia Crossing in Houston, TX. She was born on June 10, 1936, in Lasara, Texas, Willacy County.

After graduating from Lyford High School in 1954, Doris worked as a telephone operator at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. She and Ashley L. Strader were married from 1955 until 1962, and during their union, they were blessed with five children. In March 1965 Doris married Clarence L. Knight and became a stepmother to three sons. Her unwavering faith led her to dedicate her early years to raising her children. Later, she re-entered the workforce, serving as a clerk and cashier at T.G.&Y. from 1972 to 1983, Walmart from 1984 to 1995, and Publix Super Markets from 1995 to 2004. Her impeccable cash accountability often earned her recognition in these roles.

Doris’ legacy lives on through her children: Jimmy L. Strader and wife Sandy, Debra A. Hood and husband Robert, Curtis W. Strader, Linda K. Strader, Steven A. Strader, David L. Knight and wife Delia, Joseph L. Knight and wife Joan, and Mark A. Knight. Additionally, Doris is survived by her sister, Mildred D. Simpson, along with 16 grandchildren, and 32 great-grandchildren.

Doris was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Clarence L. Knight, as well as her mother, Agnes A. Wilde Nash, and her father, Lester G. Nash. She also joins her sisters Loretta R. Hetler, Lorene M. Stahl, and Gloria J. Sain, her brothers David L. Nash and Carl W. Nash, one grandchild, and one great-grandchild.

As the pastor’s wife, Doris dedicated many years to serving the congregation at the non-denominational church on Harlingen South F Street. She found joy in reading, treasured family camping trips, and lovingly tended to her garden, where her green thumb yielded bountiful fruits and vegetables for her loved ones. Additionally, she found great delight in nurturing beautiful blooms in her flower beds and capturing precious moments with her family during trips to botanical gardens and theme parks, all meticulously documented through her photographs.

Doris Ann Knight will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

The Knight family will receive friends and relatives on Friday, June 28, 2024 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home.    A graveside will take place on Saturday, June 29, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria.
