Doris Ernst, 99, a long-time resident of Harlingen, Texas, passed away on June 24, 2013.
Doris was born on January 15, 1914 in Bartlett, Texas to the late "Dixie" and A.K. "Ford" Wheeler. She was the fifth of seven children. She was the last surviving member of that generation of her family. After graduating from high school, Doris moved to Harlingen, Texas. Doris made her home in the Rio Grande Valley for most her life.
Doris started playing golf at the age of 24 at the Ebony Hills golf course in Edinburg, Texas and continued to play as a member of the McAllen Country Club and the Harlingen Country Club. Her love for the sport continued for the rest of her life. She played in numerous tournaments, claiming many trophies and titles along the way. Over her 50 years of competitive play she made countless birdies, eagles, and seven holes in one. Her advice to golfers: "Keep your head down because you can't look up and see a good score!" In her later years she was an avid television fan of PGA tournaments, and she enjoyed watching the Houston Astros baseball team.
Doris was preceded in death by four loving husbands, C.C. "Firpo" Harrison, Cecil O. Gingrass, Russell Lee, and Benjamin H. Ernst.
Doris is survived by her stepson, Joseph J. Ernst and wife, Sandy; five nieces and nephews, Dixie Coleman, of Harlingen, Texas; Jane Bynum and husband, Bill, of Austin, Texas; Bill Moore of Odessa, Texas; Bob Wheeler and wife, Sandy, of Corpus Christi, Texas; and Jim Wheeler of Corpus Christi, Texas; and more than 45 grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend sincere appreciation to Doris's faithful caregivers, Yolanda Arismendez and Martha Martinez, for their gracious and loving devotion.
The graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on July 6, 2013 at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Edinburg, Texas.
