Doris Louise Benedict

Harlingen, TX: Doris Louise Benedict, 94, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 23, 2010, at her residence in Harlingen, Texas.  She was born October 28, 1915, in Frankfort, New York, to Otto and Eva Leonardson.  Doris married Russell A. Benedict in 1942, and they shared their lives together for 48 years, living primarily in Riverwoods, Illinois.

She attended Eastern Michigan University, majoring in home economic, and was an excellent seamstress and baker. Doris worked as a sportswear buyer in Pontiac, Michigan and made numerous buying trips to New York City. She was an excellent athlete and enjoyed swimming, diving, skating and her favorite, tennis.  Her greatest accomplishment was the loving care she gave to her handicapped son, Russell Benedict, Jr. for which we are all so grateful.

She is preceded in death by parents, her husband Russell, and her brother, Orville Leonardson.

Doris is survived by her sons, Tom (Anne) Benedict of Olney, Maryland, Russell Benedict Jr., of Harlingen, Texas, daughter Deborah (Barry) Benedict of Mercedes, Texas, grandchildren, Nancy (Manuel) Correa of Boston, Massachusetts, Paul Benedict of Greensboro, North Carolina, Morgan Jones of Mercedes, Texas, Todd Jones of Austin, Texas and her sister Eleanor Crothers of Lakelande, Florida.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, December 4, 2010, at the Lodge at Camelot, 1000 Camelot Drive, Harlingen, Texas.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made First United Methodist Church, 200 W. 16th St., Mercedes, Texas 78570.  Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
