Dora Roland, age 91, died on Jan. 9, 2009, at her home in Harlingen, Texas.
She was born in Oakwood, Texas, on September 2, 1917, to John C. and Edna (Albers) Lamon. Dora and her family moved to the Harlingenarea in the mid 1920s. She graduated from HarlingenHigh Schooland BrownsvilleJunior Collegethen attended college at Texas A & I University in Kingsvilleand the Universityof Texasin Austin. Among other jobs after college, she taught school.
Dora married the love of her life, Richard (Dick) Cornelius Roland, on May 1, 1953. They lived in La Feria, farmed cotton, vegetables and citrus, and raised five children. Her favorite job was being a wife and mother. She was happily married to her devoted husband for 53 years, and she will be remembered by her children as a loving, kind, gentle and beautiful mother with a keen sense of humor.
Dora and her family loved spending time at South Padre Islandand eventually built a vacation home there. She and Dick loved to travel, play golf and spend time with friends. They were members of the Harlingen Country Club and loved being part of Life Begins at 40. She was an excellent bridge player. Before she married, Dora was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Alpha Theta Chapter, in Harlingenand the CombesBaptistChurch. She and Dick were long-time, active members of the First United Methodist Church of La Feria, Texas, and after they moved to Harlingen, they joined the First United Methodist Church of Harlingen. Dora was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Lt. Thomas Barlow Chapter.
Predeceasing Dora are her parents and husband; brothers: Garthell and Raymond (Rusty) Lamon; sister, Lorna Magee; and niece, Marianne Leggett.
She is survived by children: Dick Roland, Jr. (Martha) and Greg Roland (Sandy) of Corpus Christi, Susan Francis (Kavanaugh) of Harlingen, Steve Roland (Jenny) of Magnolia, and Larry Roland (Melissa) of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida; grandchildren: Cherri Broussard, Kelly, Todd, Erin, Steven and Will Roland, and Madeline Francis; great-grandchildren Teysha and Gash Murray; and many nieces and nephews. She will lovingly be remembered by Margarita Ibarra, a special friend of the family, and many other friends.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 11, 2009 from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home with the family present from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Memorial services will be held on Monday, January 12, 2009, 11:00 am, at the FirstUnitedMethodistChurchin Harlingenwith Pastor Eradio Valverde officiating.
