Donald Henderson Nowlin, M.D., 86, passed away November 25, 2015 at his home in Harlingen.
Donald was born May 14, 1929 in Houston, Texas to Lucille Mathilda Picard Nowlin and Robert Donnell Nowlin.  He served his country with United State Air Force as a Captain and was honorably discharge in 1966. Dr. Nowlin attended the Texas A&M University and received a Bachelor of Science in 1951 and a Master of Science in 1954. He also attended the School of Aviation Medicine in 1952 with the United State Air Force and The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX and received a Doctor of Medicine in 1958.    Dr. Nowlin received the Internship/Certificate of Hospital Service from Kansas City General Hospital in 1959, his residency in Orthopedic Surgery from The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX in 1962 and his residency in Children’s Orthopedics, Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas in 1963.   He was certified by American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Fellow.  Dr. Nowlin married Peggy Ann Conn in May 15, 1959 and they were married 56 years until time of Donald H. Nowlin’s death.  He was employed as an Orthopedic Surgeon in Houston, TX from 1963 to 2010 and Medical Evaluation Specialist in Houston, TX from 1990 to 2000.
Dr. Nowlin was an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America, a Company Commander of “E” Flight Air Force at Texas A&M University from 1950 to 1951. He was a member of Phi Beta Pi at University of Texas in Galveston, TX, Texas Orthopedic Association; Harris County Medical Association and Texas A&M University Association of Former Students.  Dr. Nowlin was a Boy Scout Leader in Houston and Harlingen, TX, president of the Medical Staff of Memorial Hospital System in Houston, TX in 1978 and Chief of Staff of the Central Unit of Memorial Hospital System in Houston, TX in 1976, was a member of the University of Texas Medical Branch Alumni Association and the Rotary Club of Houston, TX.
He was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Houston, TX, the Methodist Church in Houston, TX and St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Harlingen, TX.
Dr. Nowlin raised and bred English Mastiffs for many years; he loved to use his hands and build electronics, loved to read and spend time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Peggy Ann Nowlin of Harlingen, TX; children David Bryant Nowlin of Harlingen, TX, Robert James Nowlin (Cristina) of Kerrville, TX and Susan Nowlin Wieboldt (Werner) of Harlingen, TX; grandchildren David Wade Nowlin of San Antonio, TX; Kendall Cathleen Nowlin of San Antonio, TX, Connor Henderson Nowlin of Kerrville, TX; Werner Augustus Wieboldt, V of Harlingen, TX, and Taryn Kuczynski (Kevin); sister Roberta Lou Wolfram of Kansas City, Missouri; and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Dr. Nowlin was preceded in death by his parents Lucille Picard Nowlin and Robert Donnell Nowlin.
Visitation will be held Sunday, November 29, 2015 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home from 2 pm to 5 pm.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at Forest Park Lawndale in Houston at 2 pm.
