Dolores "Lolita" Salazar

November 20, 1937 — July 1, 2016

Dolores “Lolita” Salazar (78), died on Friday, the 1st of July 2016.  Born on the 20th of November 1937, in San Benito to her parents Martin Salazar Sr. & Eloisa Salazar.
Dolores Salazar’s  love for sports began in her home town of San Benito, Texas. She was a student of Jeanne C leckler and a member of the Pioneering Girls’ Softball and Basketball Teams. Back in the day, girls teams did not compete in the District Arena.  After graduation she headed for Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas to pursue a degree in Education. She earned both a BA and BS in Health and Physical Ed.
She returned to the RGV and began her teaching career with BISD. She spent her first six years at Central Intermediate. In 1967 she became the Head Girls Track Coach at then Brownsville High School, now Brownsville Hanna.  After 35 years in education she retired .
During her coaching years, she captured four district titles, coached serval outstanding athletes to regional and state competitions in which titles were won.
Dolores was a Rio Grande Valley Coaches Assoc. Honoree in 2000, and  was inducted into the RGV Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
Dolores believed that, “ sucesses and rewards are not established by the number of titles or trophies, but by the comradeship and good sportsmanship that is developed and nurtured within team effort.”  It was her personal goal, to instill in her athletes, that these are skills that build character and make a difference throughout life.
She is preceded in death by her  loving parents Martin & Eloisa Salazar and brothers Jose Salazar, Martin Salazar Jr., Demencio Salazar Sr..
Survivors include her close friend Sylvia Senteno, and many special nieces and nephews.
Honarary Pallbearers will be Jose M. Salazar, D.R. Salazar, Erick Michael Garza, Al Saenz, David Bishop, and Ernesto Gonzalez.
Visitation is Tuesday, the 5th of July 2016, beginning at 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a Holy Rosary to begin at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday within the San Benito Funeral Home Chapel, 1400 West Highway 77, San Benito, Texas 78586.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday, the 6th of June 2016, at 10:00 a.m.  at St. Benedict Catholic Church in San Benito, TX. Interment will follow to Mont Meta Cemetery.
