David Erwin Sykes passed away on April 26, 2022 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida where he stayed between cruises. Born August 18, 1953 in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, he was the son of the late Eskew Ervin and Hazel Sykes.
David’s residence was in Rio Hondo, he also resided in Louisiana, Vidor, Texas, Houston, Texas, Battleground, Washington, Nada, Texas, Carlsbad, California, Littleton, Colorado and Arroyo City, Texas.
David completed a Bachelor’s of Science Degree with majors in accounting, economics and a minor in computers. He went to work for McElvain Energy Inc. and retired as a McElvain Investment and Family Administrator. David was a member of the NRA and GOP, a jokester, had an unusual sense of humor, and loved to debate.
He enjoyed fishing, cruising having gone on four world cruises, cooking, a die-hard Cowboy fan and also an Astro fan.
His father and mother precede him in death.
Left to treasure David’s memory is his loving wife Glenda Jo Sykes; children, David Erwin Sykes Jr, Pamela Salewski, Rusty Keith Sykes; and one grandchild Talin Sykes. He is also survived by his brother Michael Sykes (Dana); nephew Michael Sykes Jr, sister-in-law Debra Hartley (Jay White) ; and brother-in-law Robert Eichmann (joke: called Margo Johnson his office wife and Jana his Dallas wife, they took care of him at the office and in Dallas). Survived by close friends, Frank Matz, Wayne Fuqua, John Steuble, Guy McElvain, and Clem Korenek.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to all the staff at Broward Health medical Center for their care of David and support of Glenda.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are Frank Matz, Christopher Elliff, Michael Fuqua, Brandon Salewski and Michael Sykes Jr. Serving as honorary pallbearer is Wayne Fuqua.
The Sykes family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, May 3, 2022 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home. A celebration of David’s life will take place on Wednesday, May 4, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
