David L. Ward

March 25, 1917 — January 28, 2012

Baytown/Primera, TX:
David Lewis Ward passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 28, 2012 in Baytown, Texas.  He was born on March 25, 1917 in San Antonio, Texas, but lived most of his life in the Rio Grande Valley near Harlingen, Texas in the small incorporated community of Primera.  He attended Texas A & M and left to proudly serve his country as an officer in the United States Army during World War II where he reached the rank of Captain in the Signal Corps. He met his wife, Laura Hottal Ward while growing up in Primera and they married in December of 1942. After the war was over and David returned to civilian life, he and Laura made their home in Primera and raised their three children there.
He is survived by Laura, his wife of 69 years, two daughters; Barbara (and Gerard) Probandt of Houston and Laura (and Milton) Kellner of Baytown; five grandchildren and eleven great-grand children.
David Ward owned a grocery store and a cattle feedlot in Primera from 1946- 1961.  He worked to help incorporate Primera into a city and served as its first mayor.  He retired from the United States Post Office as a rural carrier in Harlingen, TX and served as South Texas Area Steward of the Texas State Rural Carriers Association.  He enjoyed raising horses and cattle, calf roping, and hunting.  After retirement David and Laura lived in Freer, Texas and in Livingston, Texas before moving to Baytown in 2004 to live closer to their children and grandchildren.  David had a unique personality, a twinkle in his eye, never met a stranger, and always had a good story to tell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Delbert and Nell Ward, two brothers, Delbert and Sterling Ward, and his son, David Douglas Ward.
Graveside services will be held at Mont Meta Memorial Park, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 with Military Honors being conducted by the American Legion Post #205.
