David Mecke, 71, of Harlingen, TX died June 21st in Harlingen following a long battle with COPD and finally, lung cancer. David was born in San Antonio, TX on May 12, 1944 to Ben F. and Aline Epple Mecke, both deceased. David was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School where he was active in the swimming and football teams. He attended Texas A & M-Kingsville.
David was married to Marilyn (Penny) Mecke for the past 20 years and was a Sales Manager for Doggett Heavy Equipment Co. selling John Deere. His career had carried him from Houston to El Paso and from Albuquerque to Alabama. Dave loved golf, reading, travel, and watching football on TV.
The Mecke family were long time members of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in San Antonio. All three boys received a fine Christian education at St. Ann’s School.
David is survived by his wife Penny Mecke, step-daughter Darla Oldham of Australia; two wonderful daughters from his first marriage, Debi Sue Kuykendall and husband Larry of Oak Leaf, TX; Tanya Leigh Dorsett and husband Bob Dorsett of Austin, who have two children Hannah, 15, a volleyball player and Trey, 11, who plays football. David had two brothers, Craig M. and wife Patsy of Magdalena, NM and Mike B. of Kerrville, TX. Dave also is survived by many cousins.
Services will be announced later. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a memorial donation to the Cancer Society of your choice.
