Daphine “Jean” Shanks
Combes, TX:
Jean went home to her Lord on Sunday, February 6, 2011 at Harlingen Nursing Center.
She was born on August 7, 1927 to Thomas and Leta B. Snelson in Munday, Texas, being one of nine children; she was one of two surviving sisters.
She moved to the Valley with her mother, two brothers and one of her sisters in August 1943. At that time she went to work for Sears Roebuck, while working at Sears she met the love of her life, Wilbert A. “Bonnie” Shanks. They were married on November 26, 1945, and were married for 64 years.
Jean also worked for several years for Cameron County Farm Bureau, and then she went to work for American National Insurance Company in 1957 and worked some 30 years and retired in 1990.
She was preceded in death by her parents, all her brothers and three sisters. Also by her beloved husband “Bonnie”.
Jean was a member of the First Baptist Church of Combes, Texas, where taught Sunday School for many years. She was also in charge of decorating the alter and the flower arrangements. She took pride in making the flower arrangements and all holiday displays.
Jean is survived by her sister, Marie Pierce of Decatur, TX and many nieces and nephews and one in particular, Janette and Layman Arthur of Paradise, Texas. They were her loyal caretakers.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 9, 2011 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present to receive friends from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 10, 2011, 10 a.m., at First Baptist Church of Combes with Rev. Steve Wiest officiating. Interment will follow at Harlingen-Combes Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of the First Baptist Church of Combes.
