Curtis R. Michalk

February 23, 1932 — August 12, 2010

Harlingen, TX:
Curtis Ray Michalk, 78, died on August 12, 2010 at his home surrounded by family.  He is survived by his wife, Jeri (Collier) Michalk and four children, Donna (Bob) Swinnea of Arroyo City, Tom Michalk of Houston, Carla (Steve) Barker of Spring and Nathan (Shelly) Michalk of Iola.
Curtis was born February 23, 1932 in Taylor, TX to G.A. and Lena Thaler Michalk.  He graduated from Thorndale High School in 1949.  It was here that he met the love of his life, Jeri.  They were married on July 24, 1950 and were blessed to recently celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with family and friends at Arroyo Baptist Chapel in Arroyo City where Curtis was a deacon and active member.
When Curtis graduated from high school, he began working for the C.R. Anthony company in Taylor, TX.  He and Jeri moved their family to Weslaco in 1956 and he managed the C.R. Anthony store until 1974.  He then became the owner/operator of the Michalk Texaco in Weslaco and later worked for the Town Crier.  After their move to Harlingen in 2002, he continued to work various jobs in Weslaco and Harlingen.  When at home, Curtis could be found in his shop working on one of his various woodworking projects.  We are all honored to have a treasured piece of his handiwork.
Curtis is also survived by a brother, Rodney (Pat) Michalk of Cedar Park and a sister, Debbie (Keith) Taylor of Austin and by his grandchildren, Wendy (John) Miller of The Woodlands, Scott (Brenda) Swinnea and Gina Nations of Harlingen, Cherith (Ashley) Fenton of Port Aransas, Melissa Michalk of Canyon Lake, Joelle (Brandon) Delaney of Pearland, Payton Webb and Blaine Webb of Spring and Avery Michalk and Nathan Rodolfo Michalk of Iola and seven great grandchildren.  He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Delle (Bill) Merritt of Lake Brownwood and Jo Ann Guillory of Houston.  He was preceded in death by his parents, G.A. and Lena Michalk, his parents-in-law, Rev. T.F. and Jewell Collier and an infant grandson.
Our dad worked in the public eye for many years in Weslaco and Harlingen. He served as a deacon at First Baptist Church in Weslaco and later at Arroyo Baptist Chapel.  Whether you met him in C.R. Anthony or as you walked in the doors of the church or more important, the front door of our home, you always knew you would be greeted with a smile.  He was a gentle, quiet, kind and sweet man, who loved a good joke, and yet was so strong.  His prayers and dreams were for the blessing of his family.  He could truly be called “a man after God’s own heart”.  A former pastor once said that when Curtis Michalk spoke, he knew that he needed to be quiet and listen.  He was truly a strong, quiet presence in many peoples’ lives and will be missed more than we can express.  However, he also had a strong love for his Lord and was confident that he had an eternal home in heaven.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 15, 2010 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, August 16, 2010, 10 a.m., at First Baptist Church in Harlingen with Rev. Bill Merritt and Rev. Bob White officiating.  Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Scott Swinnea, Payton Webb, Blaine Webb, Nate Michalk, John Miller, Ashley Fenton, Brandon Delaney and Nicholas Brons.
If so desired, memorial contribution may be made to Arroyo Baptist Chapel Building Fund, P.O. Box 1288, Rio Hondo, Texas 78583.
