Harlingen-Curtiss R. Conrad was born on June 12, 1941 and died at the age of 74 surrounded by loving family on May 5, 2016. As a boy he was raised in Harlingen and graduated from Harlingen High School in 1959. Curtiss was a proud Cardinal and lettered in football four years. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1965; graduated with a BA in Marketing from Texas A & I University (Kingsville) in 1964. In 1991 he founded Rio Filter Supply, one of his proudest accomplishments, serving the Rio Grande Valley and Northern Mexico.
Curtiss was a member of St. Albans’ Episcopal Church, the Harlingen Country Club and served the City of Palm Valley on the Planning and Zoning Committee. In 1999 he was Director of Life Begins at 40.
Curtiss is survived by his devoted wife of 39 years, Barbara and the children of their blended family, Charlene (Mike) McCartney, Gray Conrad and Tammy (Randy) Hansen and Debby (Terry) Steelhammer, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, his brother Paul and niece and nephews.
Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be Directors of Life Begins at 40. Pallbearers will be his long-time trusted employee, Miguel Aguirre, Bobby Cantrell, John Topp and his sons-in-law: Randy Hansen, Mike McCartney and Terry Steelhammer.
Visitation will be Sunday, May 8 with family present from 6-8 pm at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home. A celebration of Curtiss’ life will be at St. Albans’ Episcopal Church, 1417 E. Austin Ave. at 2 pm on Monday, May 9 with Father Scott Brown officiating. Burial will be at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, with full military honors on Monday, May 16.
