Harlingen:
Cornelia Margaret Junkin, 89, passed away Monday June 9, 2008 at VBMC Harlingen.
Cornelia was born March 23, 1919 in Corpus Christi, Texas to parents Gus and Lennie B. Fry.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John. H. Junkin; her boys, John H. Junkin Jr., Douglas R Junkin & Michael S. Junkin. Also, her brother, Raymond Fry and his wife June.
She is survived by her grandson Douglas R. Junkin Jr., his mother Sheryl; granddaughter Courtney C. Penuelas (Orlando), grandson Sterling Junkin, and their mother Darling; great grandsons Nicolas, Benjamin and Zachary.
Cornelia was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
Cornelia moved to Harlingen as a child and graduated from Harlingen High School in 1938. She attended junior college in Brownsville, Texas.
Cornelia married John H. Junkin during the height of World War II. Luckily, John was stationed in California during the war and they were able to spend the war together.
Upon returning to Harlingen, she became very active in the community as well as working at the family’s furniture store, Junkin’s.
Cornelia was a past member and president of Harlingen Junior Service League.
She was a current member of Beta Sigma Phi and PEO, serving in all positions. Her ‘sisters’ of the sorority and PEO were very important to her.
Cornelia was a member of First Baptist Church, Harlingen. There she served as Fourth Grade Sunday School Director for over 34 years. After retiring as director, she enjoyed volunteering with the HOSTS program at Austin Elementary.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 11, 2008 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, June 12, 2008, 11 a.m., at Mont Meta Mausoleum Chapel in San Benito.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Griffin, John Henderson, Clifford Muir, Ken Creekmore, Stan Newding, Doug Junkin, Sterling Junkin and Orlando Penuelas
