Connie G. Lopez

September 17, 1913 — December 30, 2010

Harlingen:
Concepcion (Connie) Lopez our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed from death to life on Thursday, December 30, 2010.
Connie was born in San Manuel, Texas on September 17, 1913 to Santiago and Marie Luisa Garza.  After completing high school in Edinburg, she learned the hair styling trade and Holtry’s Beauty School in Harlingen where she met her husband of 72 years, Federico Lopez, Jr.  She worked at her cousin’s beauty salon in Kingsville, TX until her wedding plans were completed.  They married in 1939 and raised their four sons, Federico III, James, Joseph and Albert in Harlingen.  Her knowledge of the beauty industry helped her husband in the continued success of the family business, Valley Barber and Beauty Supply until their retirement in 1995.
Some of her many interests were her work with St. Anthony’s Altar Society, R.G. Valley Museum Board and the Planning Committee for the 50th Anniversary of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Harlingen.
Her sons and grandchildren enjoyed the tales of early ranch life in San Manuel.  The family picnics at the Sol del Rey salt lake on Easter Sunday, the cattle drives to Kansas City as told by her father, the week long treks to Brownsville to buy supplies by covered wagon as told by her mother and the encounters with Indians at the salt lake in the remote ranch country of Texas.  Her fondest memory was of her Great Grandfather, Manuel Chapa, who established the community of San Manuel, naming it after his patron saint.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Federico Lopez, Jr.  She is survived by her four sons, Fred (Enriquita), James, Joe (Lisa) and Albert (Mary); grandchildren, Laura, Melissa, James Jr., Terri, Dominic, Javier, Tara, Dori, Joe Jr., Myra, and Jackie and six great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
Visitation hours will be Sunday, January 2, from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM and visitation with the family on Monday, January 3, from noon to 5:00 PM at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.  The Rosary will be said at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home, Monday, January 3 at 7:00 PM.
The funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, January 4th at 10:00 AM at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Harlingen with the burial service following at the Garza-Chapa Family Cemetery in San Manuel, TX.  Pallbearers will be James Lopez, Jr., Dominic Lopez, Javier Lopez, Matthew Lee, Tyler White and Frank Lopez.
Following the burial services the family requests friends to come by the Lopez residence at 918 S. 25th St. in Harlingen at 2:00 PM.  Call (956) 535-0673 for directions.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul or a charity of choice.

Connie’s favorite color was pink and in her honor the family ask that you wear something pink to the funeral mass!
