Claudio Marroquin Gonzales, 76, a lifelong resident of San Benito, went home to Our Lord Jesus Christ on Tuesday, February 26, 2008. Claudio had been active in politics when he was younger, serving as a city commissioner and Mayor Protem for the city of San Benito. He worked for Pittsburgh Paint and Glass Co. for 25 years before opening his own business, Harlingen Glass Co., in 1977. He was an instrumental force in the creation of the Rio Grande Valley Glass Association and was involved with both the Texas and National Glass Association up until the time he sold his business in 2002. Claudio was a devoted brother, father, father-in-law, and grandfather or “po-po” as his grandsons called him. He was an avid hunter who enjoyed the company of his family and friends. His pride and joy were his grandchildren. He would attend every event to show his support. From ballet recitals, plays, football, soccer, basketball, and baseball games to high school graduation. Claudio was preceded in death by his parents, Pedro and Maria Gonzales; his wife, Dora C. Gonzales, who passed away just 7 weeks ago; his brothers, Fidencio and Juan Gonzales; his sister,
Ernestina Hernandez; and his granddaughters, Sarah Marie and Rachel Elizabeth Engle. He is survived by his daughters, Geraldine (David) Gonzales-Gutierrez of Houston and Sandra (Juan) Tovar of Harlingen; his grandchildren, Anna Christine Engle and Andrew Christopher Engle of Houston, Juan Claudio Tovar, Sebastian George Tovar, and Jacob Ray Tovar of Harlingen; His brother, Jose (Oralia) Gonzales of San Benito; his sisters, Cristina (Adelido) Gonzales, Ofelia (Roberto) Flores, Amelia (Evaristo) Gonzales of San Benito, Maria Zuniga of Florida, and Eugenia (Gillermo) Leiva of California; numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Juan Tovar, Juan Claudio Tovar, Sebastian Tovar, Danny Gonzales, Gabriel Gonzales, Ricky Gonzales, Roy Gonzales, and Chris Ortiz.
Honorary pallbearers will be Andrew Engle, David Gutierrez, Jacob Tovar, Jose Gonzales, Roberto Flores, and the guys at coffee. He will be greatly missed. Visitation will be on Friday February 29, 2008 at San Benito Funeral Home with a Rosary at 7pm. Funeral Services will be on Saturday March 1, 2008 at 12:30pm at St. Benedict Catholic Church in San Benito with interment at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
