Clarence Laverle Knight, 94, passed away November 29, 2014 at Regent Care of Kingwood in Humble, Texas.
Clarence was born September 28, 1920 in Huckaby, Erath County, Texas to Gora Herndon Knight and Laura Elizabeth Friebele Knight. He graduated from San Benito High School in 1942; and after WWII, Clarence attended Anderson Bible College in Anderson, Indiana. He served his country in the Army Air Force during WWII as a Technical Sergeant Waist Gunner on the B24 Liberator Queen of the Angels and flew 50 combat missions in the Northern Solomons, Central Pacific, Guadalcanal, New Guinea, Bismarck Archipelago, Western Pacific, Eastern Mandates, and Southern Philippians Campaigns. Clarence married Norma Lee Gifford in September 1945 until February 1964. In March 1965 he married Doris Ann Nash and acquired five step-children whom he raised as his own. Clarence was employed with Central Power and Light and retired after 33 years of service.
For many years Clarence served as Pastor of Harlingen South F Street non-denominational church which was established in the mid 1950’s. He continued in the family ministry. His mother had been the church pianist and his father had been the church song leader. Clarence served God in Street Ministries in his early years and through answering prayer lines for Trinity Broadcasting Network in his later years. When his children were at home, he enjoyed annual camping trips to the beach or the hill country. He often had a song on his lips, most recently while cruising the halls of the nursing home in his wheelchair.
Clarence is survived by his wife, Doris Ann Knight of Humble, TX; children David L. Knight (Delia) of Bennington, OK, Joseph L. Knight (Joan) of Harlingen, TX; Mark A. Knight of Portland, OR, Jimmy L. Strader (Sandy) of Bacliff, TX, Debra Strader Moomaw (Butch) of Spring Branch, TX; Curtis W. Strader (Connie) Bacliff, TX, Linda Strader Moses (Jerry) of Houston, TX, Steven A. Strader of Pasadena, TX; 18 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; sister Wanda (Billie) M. Sutter and husband Jack of Brownsville, TX.
He was preceded in death by his sister Virginia Elizabeth Bennett and husband James Alton Bennett Sr. and children James A. Bennett Jr., and Barbara Ann Newberry.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 from 12 pm to 8 pm with the family present from 6 pm to 8 pm at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at 10 am at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home, 710 Ed Carey Dr., Harlingen, TX 78550 with Pastor Kelly Rumsfeld officiating. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park, 14166 E. Business 83, La Feria, TX 78559.
