Cheryl Gray

February 18, 1949 — March 29, 2008

Harlingen:
Cheryl Card Gray of Harlingen, TX, passed gracefully into heaven on Saturday, March 29, 2008, surrounded by her loving family.
Cheryl was born at Camp Lejuene, North Carolina on February 18, 1949 and traveled the world as a member of our Marine Corps family.  As a young adult, Cheryl chose to settle in Harlingen, joining her family and making it her home.
Cheryl is survived by her husband of twenty-six years, Harold Gray; her parents, Bill and Garrison Card, her brother, Bill Card III (Darla) and sisters, Gerri Maxfield and Patti Smith (David).  All of her nieces and nephews, as well as her grand nieces and nephews mourn her loss; also her many friends and colleagues who admired and loved her for the person and friend she was, wish to express their sense of loss.
Cheryl was a dedicated wife, daughter, sister and aunt, whose love for her family and friends never wavered.  She spent her adult life in service to the Harlingen Independent School District, where she served with honor over the past thirty-five years.  Eighteen of those years were spent as the principal of her beloved Stuart Place Elementary where Cheryl significantly and positively impacted the lives of thousands of students and faculty over the years.  Her greatest legacy comes from this service to others, which is extremely fitting of the life that Cheryl led.  In the words of her colleagues, “Cheryl had the leadership to inspire a campus to excellence and the grace to kneel to meet the eyes of a child”.  Cheryl Gray lived a life worth living.  Her acts will not be forgotten and she will remain in our hearts forever.  Our only solace as a family comes from the knowledge that Cheryl is now cradled in the hands of God, resting in peace.
The family would also like to thank all of the dedicated caregivers, especially Nora Grebe and Dr. Bruce Leibert, who helped Cheryl face her battle against cancer with dignity and grace.
Finally, as Cheryl requested, in lieu of flowers, contributions to the “Make a Wish Foundation,” One Park Place, Suite 405, McAllen, Texas, 78503; would be deeply appreciated.
A memorial service will be held at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Harlingen, Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at 4:00 P.M.
