Cecil “Gene” Magouirk died Sunday, July 9, 2017 at his home in Harlingen, TX. Born on March 3, 1951, to Clarence and Norma Jean (Kerr) Magouirk in San Benito, TX, Gene was 66 years old.
Gene was a proud San Benito Greyhound graduating in 1969 and still enjoyed great friendships with his former classmates. He also attended Texas A&I University.
Gene loved life, especially hunting and fishing, barbecuing and spending time with family and friends. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan proudly displaying their flag every Sunday in his front yard. He had an infectious smile and loved to tell stories and play jokes that made everybody laugh and smile with him. He also enjoyed playing Santa Claus for all the family kids at Christmas.
He worked for CPL/AEP San Benito Power Plant for 35 years and after its closing obtained his Captain’s license and started Ankle Deep Charters which was his dream job. He also worked at the Texas Boll Weevil Eradication Foundation for a few years before finally retiring.
He especially loved helping and watching kids learn to fish and hunt and delighted when they caught their first fish or harvested their first deer. That was especially true with his sons, Travis and Tyler, who have the fishing and hunting bug just like their dad.
His two daughters, Shannon and Melissa, were his little princesses whom he loved very much. He delighted in their little girl ways and enjoyed hosting slumber parties for the girls and their cousins.
He married his wife, Pam, on March 14, 1985 and spent their honeymoon at the Rio Grande Valley Livestock show, which was a running joke every year on their anniversary, because he said “it was every woman’s dream to honeymoon at the stock show”. Not sure Pam agreed, but many years she accompanied him as it was one of his favorite spring activities.
Gene will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Especially missing him will be his wife, Pam, his children, Shannon Fischer (Teri), Melissa Beam(Eric), Travis Gene Magouirk (Kristy) and Tyler Magouirk (Lisa); his grandchildren Christopher Parrack, Kate Parrack, Katlyn Beam, Chloe Harris, Trevor Gene Magouirk; his sister Peggy Brown (Charlie) and his beloved mother, Norma Jean Magouirk. He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Magouirk and his brother, Skipper Magouirk.
Services will be held Thursday, July 13, 2017 at 2:00pm at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home and officiated by Chaplain Joe Perez. Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 12, 2017 from 12:00pm – 8:00pm with the family present between 6:00pm – 8:00pm.
