Harlingen, TX:
The Heavenly Gates opened up for Carmen V. Fuentes, 88, on November 20, 2012.
Carmen was born February 27, 1924 to Major Fernando and Manuela Irizarry in Santurce, Puerto Rico where she grew up. It was there where she met the love of her life, Chief Warrant Officer Jose Manuel Fuentes. They married on April 3, 1943 and had four children, Jose Jr., Violeta, Ada and Carmen Margarita. She traveled with her family to Japan, Hawaii, Wake Island, Washington DC, Panama and Cuba and visited most of the 50 states. They finally settled in the Rio Grande Valley in 1964. She enjoyed life to the fullest, volunteering at the State Chest Hospital, Amigos Del Valle, Harlingen CISD, and Valley Baptist Medical Center. She loved everyone she met. Once you knew her, she was a keeper, and never met a stranger. Carmen sang on the radio when she was 18 and has been singing ever since especially at the nursing home she was in the last three years of her life.
Carmen is survived by three of her children, Jose Jr., Violeta (Ernesto) Cavazos and Ada Patton. Also surviving are her six grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, two step-great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter, Emma Cadence Gracia.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jose Manuel; daughter, Carmen Margarita; daughter-in-law, Debbie Fuentes; her parents, Fernando and Manuela; and six brothers and sisters.
She will be fondly remembered by all who knew her and will never be forgotten.
Carmen enjoyed and cherished her time with her sitter, Rosalinda Vasquez; they were a team, always together. Thank you for everything Rosalinda. Carmen loves you.
Many thanks to all her caregivers.
A Memorial Rosary will be held on Saturday, November 24, 2012 at 7 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home with a family gathering from 4 p.m. till Rosary time.
