Harlingen:
Calvin Humark Shamlian, 88, passed away Monday, April 3, 2012 at his residence in Harlingen.
Calvin was born on September 30, 1923 in Boston, MA to Luther and Helen Shamlian. He served with the United States Navy during World War II where he received his diploma. He was the ships cook on the USS Yorktown from 1942 to 1946. While serving in the Navy he received the WW II Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
After Cal’s service in the Navy he moved to the Rio Grande Valley in 1946 and married in 1950, where he raised his four children. He retired after working in the non-food wholesale business in 1986. He was a member of the American Legion and the C.A.F.
Cal is survived by his children; Steve (Liz) Shamlian of Harlingen, Carey (Pat) Shamlian of Harlingen, Sherry (James) McElwrath of New Branufels, TX and Kenneth Shamlian of Victoria, TX; 8 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers, Gregory and Aram Shamlian and by his dog & companion, Rusty.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation from 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with the family present from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Thursday, April 5, 2012 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
Graveside services only with Full Military Honor’s being conducted by the American Legion Post #205 will be held at Mont Meta Memorial Park, 10:00 AM, Friday, April 6, 2012.
Cal will be greatly missed by his family and always remembered for his love of God and his Country.
