Buford Cunningham

June 4, 1928 — January 10, 2015

BAYVIEW, TX. - Buford Cunningham of Bayview, Texas passed away January 10, 2015 at the age of 86.  A longtime resident of Eddy, Texas Buford spent the last two and a half years in the warm sunny Rio Grande Valley living with his daughter Anita and son-in law Joe Baker after his beloved wife, Anna passed away in 2012. He spent his days enjoying what he loved best…. fishing, gardening, and going to the flea market.

San Benito Funeral Home will prepare and transport Buford to Cole Funeral Home in McGregor, Texas where the funeral will be held. Full military honor services will be conducted at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas.

Mr. Cunningham was born June 4, 1928 in Neptune, Tennessee and growing up in Southside, Tennessee.  He received his primary education in Southside before joining the U.S. Army in 1946.  Buford was the son of Marshall and Emma Cunningham of Southside.

During the Berlin Airlift in 1947, Buford met the love of his life, his wife Anna Zuhr of which he shared 64 years.  They had four wonderful daughters who he cherished.  Buford was a loving and devoted father and husband spending all his free time with his family.  They spent many days fishing, rock hunting, sightseeing, and just being together.  Buford loved fishing and gardening.  Buford was a very special man.  He always put his family and others first.  He never thought about himself.

Spending 26 years in the U.S. Army he dedicated his life to his family and country.  His service career included the end of World War II, Korea, and 2 tours of Viet Nam.  His honors (of which he humbly guarded) included:
WWII Victory Medal, WWII German Occupation Berlin Airlift, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal with Bronze Clasp 2 Loops, Meritorious Achievement The Republic of Viet Nam, “Heroism” The Army Commendation Medal Republic of Viet Nam, The Bronze Star Medal Republic of Vietnam, The Army Commendation Medal First Oak Leaf Cluster, The Bronze Star Medal First Oak Leaf Cluster, The Army Commendation Medal 2nd Oak Leaf Cluster.

Buford’s numerous lists of other achievements and medals from his dedication to serve his county was impeccable.  He retired an E-8.

Our nation’s candles will flicker a little dimmer as we lose another member of our country’s greatest generation.

He is survived by his four daughters and son-in laws, Mary Hamilton and Jim of Moody, Texas,   Patricia Altman and Bill of Dothan, Alabama, Ramona Skates and David of Elgin, Texas, and Anita Baker and Joe of Bayview, Texas.  He is also survived by his brother Morris Cunningham of Nashville, TN, Sisters Shirley Proctor and Martha Harvey of Southside.  Grandchildren include Windy Altman, Anna Hickein, Donald Fuller, James Hamilton, Jason Hamilton, Angela Kroeker, Great grandchildren include Taylor Williams, Thomas and Jonathan Hamilton,  Kaydence, Caleb, Kylie Hamilton, Zayne Anderson, Jaxon Anderson, Gavin Fuller, and Isabeau Fuller.

Buford leaves a legacy of Honesty, Integrity, and High Christian Principles. He will truly be missed.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 2015, between the hours of 6:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. at the Cole Funeral Home of McGregor, Texas. A chapel service will commence on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at nine o’clock in the morning, at Cole. Interment with full military honors will then follow at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas.
