Bonnie Dee Saunders, age 74, of San Benito, Texas passed away peacefully at her home on May 22, 2016. Bonnie was born on April 9, 1942 in Detroit, Michigan to Clifford and Geneva Jacobson.
Bonnie married Steve Saunders on February 3, 1962. She graduated from Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan and then became a teacher. She was a compassionate educator, preferring to teach math at the challenging middle school level, which she did with grace and patience. She worked in education for many years in Michigan and Texas. She applied that same level of kindness and compassion in her role as an educator as she did in her role as a mother to her and Steve’s six children. She had a radiant smile and a warm demeanor, and was full of forgiveness and patience (something often tested raising four sons and two daughters). She was a wonderful cook, baker, and seamstress. As a longtime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she had a love for hymns. If you asked Bonnie to pass the lettuce at the dinner table, you could expect a rousing chorus of “Lettuce All Press On.” It was this joy and humor that made Bonnie a wonderful spirit and friend. Bonnie was dearly loved by her family and the community of educators with which she was blessed to work.
Bonnie is survived by her husband of 54 years, Steve Saunders, who has been her dedicated caretaker through many rounds of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. While she fought the battle against cancer many times and won, the physical and mental effects of chemo and radiation took their toll, and she is now in the loving arms of her parents in a place of peace and rest.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 3, 2016 at 10 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2320 Haine Dr., Harlingen, TX.
She is survived by her husband, K. Stephen Saunders; a twin sister, Connie Jacobson Brown, and a husband, Bob, her brother, Gary Jacobson, and his wife, Mary; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Helen and Bob Van Eck. She leaves behind her six children: Darcey Reeves, Ken Saunders and wife, Angela, Mike Saunders, Mark Saunders, John Saunders and wife, Missy, Alison Ausmus and husband, John, and 27 grandchildren, as well as many other wonderful relatives and friends.
