Bill M. Farris of La Feria, Texas went to be with the Lord on December 21, 2006. He was born on September 6, 1930, in Llano, Texas. Bill was the fifth of nine children born to Terrell (Wad) and Elsie Farris. He graduated from Llano High School in 1948 and attended San Angelo State College on a baseball scholarship. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1950. Bill married Cora White on June 2, 1951. He served his country during the Korean conflict and was stationed in Japan. After his discharge from the service, Bill earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Sul Ross State College in Alpine. He was a geologist for Empire Geophysical Company before beginning his teaching and coaching career in 1958. He earned his Master of Education from the University of Georgia in 1967.
Bill Farris was a teacher and coach for 31 years, beginning first at Weslaco and then at La Feria High School where he taught chemistry, physics, and general science, as well as coaching academic UIL events. He was honored by the South Texas Tennis Coaches Association as their Coach of the Year in 88-89. He was also inducted into the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame in 1990 and to the Llano Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.
Bill was active in the Kiwanis Club, serving as president and Key Club sponsor and being twice named as Kiwanian of the Year.
He served as an elder and Sunday school teacher at the Eighth and Harrison Church of Christ for many years and counted this opportunity to serve God a great honor.
Bill Farris is survived by his wife of 55 years, his daughter, Sammye Farris of Katy, Texas; his son, William (Pete) Farris and wife, Debbie of McAllen; his grandchildren, Megan and Hollye Rorabaugh and Brionne Farris and wife, Jessica; Jenna, Stacey, and Audrey Farris; and great granddaughter, Brooklyn. He is also survived by his brothers Jim and Eddie Farris of Horseshoe Bay; Larry Farris and wife, Elaine of Kingsland; his sisters, Hazel St. Clair of San Angelo and Gail Binion and husband, Travis of Wartrace, Tennessee; brother-in-law Leland White and wife, Ila Rae of Houston. He also has numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces who were special to him.
Visitation hours will be from 9:00 AM till service time on Saturday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home, 3:00 PM, Saturday, December 23, 2006 with Jake Vincent officiating. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria. The elders of Eighth and Harrison Church of Christ will serve as honorary pallbearers.
