La Feria, TX:
Betty Jean Wilkey Magee, 82, of La Feria, Texas passed into her new life Saturday, October 31, 2009 at her residence with her children at her side.

She graduated High School in Texarkana, Texas in 1942 and attended North Texas State Teachers College in Denton, Texas where she graduated June 2, 1948 with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. In 1949 to further her education, she attended the University of Colorado in Boulder.

Because of her love of travel, she later worked for Go with Jo Tours as a tour guide. Her colossal knowledge of history, added spark to every tour she guided. Later, her love of reading led her to work for the City of La Feria as a Librarian. Her guidance through the maze of books was always a blessing to many, especially a student conducting research or writing a term paper.
Betty was a faithful member of the La Feria Baptist Church for over 50 years. She possessed a love of the Rio Grande Valley history, travel and reading. She was initiated on April 3, 1965 by the Zeta RHO Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international society of women educators. She was a member of the Sorosis Literary Club and a member of the Cameron County Historical Commission Texas. Some of her fondest memories were that of being a Cadette Girl Scout leader in Harlingen, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband of 50 years Samuel Ferguson Magee and her brother.
Betty is survived by her children Mark Lorenzo Magee, Patricia Jean Phillipp and husband Michael, Beverly Elaine Hayes, Samuel Wilkey Magee and wife Rachel; grandchildren Steven Berry Magee, Mariam Jean Magee, Tara Laurice Carlisle Macias, Zahn Michael Phillipp, Brittany Nichole Hayes, Ryan Patrick Hayes, Zoe Foy Magee and Sara Magee; and her great grandchildren, Julianna Laurice De La Garza, Jade Alexandria Macias, Caleigh Michelle Macias all of El Paso, Texas.

Following our Mother’s wishes, she will continue to teach as she did for most of her life by donating her body to science. She understood the value of education as well as research to further progress in the fight against disease. She will return to her family after she has completed her journey through science, to be placed along the side of her husband in Nixon, Texas.
The family would like to thank Dr. Todd Shenkenberg of Harlingen for his wit and humor that matched our mother’s and R. Christian Cable of Scott & White Hospital. We would also like to thank Irma Armenio. You were always there, without limitation. Your constant love and support were unmatched. Lastly, we thank CIMA Hospice nurses and aides for all their kind words and hugs by the thousands.
