Betty Mae Cummings, 86, passed away on November 8, 2011 at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen.
Betty was born April 17, 1925 in Hagerstown, Maryland to Joseph Groff and Esta (Moore) Groff. She graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1942 and shortly after the family moved to Harlingen. She married Jaret E. Cummings in 1978. Betty was co-owner and accountant of Hurricane Fence Company until 1985 and the co-owner and accountant of the Patio Specialty Shop in Harlingen, McAllen, Pharr and Brownsville.  She was a member of Alpha Beta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority from 1961 to 1983 and held numerous offices. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene of Harlingen and served as Church Secretary/Treasurer, chaired finance committee, member of church choir, and taught girls Sunday School and played the piano. Betty enjoyed traveling with her husband to Canada, Alaska and Hawaii, sewing, and crocheting, especially baby blankets.
She is survived by her daughter, Kay (Billie) Belschner of Harlingen; son, Carl R. (Anne) Scott of Mercedes; grandsons, Justin Belschner and Andrew Belschner; granddaughters, April Champbell, Taylor Scott; great granddaughters, Emily Belschner and Avery Belschner; and great grandson, Austin Belschner.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, Jaret E. Cumming,  daughter, Deborah Ann Scott and her parents.
Visitation will be held on Friday, November 11, 2011 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 12, 2011, 1 p.m., at the First Church of Nazarene in Harlingen with Rev. Mel Justice. Entombment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito.
Pallbearers will be Carl Scott, Billie Belschner, Justin Belschner, Andrew Belschner, Ramiro Martinez and Tony Abrego.
Those desiring to do so may make memorial donations to the United Way, 134 E. Van Buren #A, Harlingen, Texas 78550.
