SOUTH PADRE ISLAND – Rubin, Barnett (Barry) Daniel, age 76, succumbed on July 30, 2007, from complications due to bypass surgery after an 11-day fight to recover.
Born March 4, 1931 in New York City, Barry moved to Highland Park, Texas during his middle school years. Barry was attending Southern Methodist University when he was called to serve in the Korean War. During this time his father passed away, and upon completion of his service, Barry returned to Dallas to run the family’s wholesale garment business. He married Patricia Barnhart on October 4, 1965, and soon thereafter they opened a popular retail clothing store in Dallas – Chapter XI – known for its upscale designer jeans. In 1980, Barry set his sights on the car sales industry, spending most of his career at Sewell Village Cadillac as their top salesman.
For decades, Barry had dreamed of retiring to South Padre Island, and in 1994 he and Pat were ready to make their home here. However, not ready to quit working entirely, Barry opened Island Motors in Port Isabel. Barry actively supported the community by serving on the Chamber of Commerce and the Island’s Economic Development Council for the past nine years.
Barry is survived by his wife of 41 years, Pat; a son, Scott Rubin, and daughter, Susan Rubin of Denver, Colorado; a daughter-in-law, Michelle; three grandchildren, Lauren, Libby, Jeremy; and numerous friends. All who knew this gregarious man have been deeply touched.
Memorial service will be held Friday, August 3rd, 1 p.m., at Chapel by the Sea in South Padre Island.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center.
