HARLINGEN, TX:
Retired Col. Arthur Bresnahan Busbey, Jr., passed away in the early morning hours of Thursday, February 11, 2010, in Harlingen, TX. Arthur was born in Longview, TX, on April 27, 1922 to Arthur B. and Mollie Busbey.
Col. Busbey was raised in Dallas, TX, where early on he developed life-long hobbies of raising and breeding tropical fish and growing orchids.
He graduated from the University of Florida in Gainesville in 1947 with a Bachelor’s Degree in radio and advertising, and he pursued a broadcasting career in Wichita Falls, TX.
Arthur married Sara Catherine Clough on May 27, 1948 in Wichita Falls and re-entered active duty in the U.S. Army in 1950.
Col. Busbey’s love of travel was nurtured in the Army, where he served tours of duty in Korea, Japan, the Panama Canal Zone, Germany and stateside in many U.S. posts, He was active in W.W.II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam.
Col. Busbey’s service awards include the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Bronze Star with V Device and Legion of Merit with 2nd Oak Leaf Cluster.
Col. Busbey retired from the Army in May of 1977, at Ft. Sam Houston, TX, and with his wife Sara, moved to the small community of Los Fresnos, TX. The Busbey’s continued to enjoy traveling abroad to destinations in the Far East, on the African Continent and in South America.
Art and Sara became staunch supporters of Brownsville’s Gladys Porter Zoo as both zoo docents and through financial support. Art was travel director for zoo sponsored trips for many years and in 2008 received an award for 27 years of dedicated service and support to the zoo. He also was Honorary Director of the Board and held an Honorary Life Membership on the Docent Council of the Gladys Porter Zoo.
Col. Busbey is survived by his four children; Arthur Bresnahan Busbey, III, Charles Patrick Bruce Busbey, Mollie Elizabeth Busbey and Daniel Clough Busbey, grandchildren; Saramae DeHanas, Laralen Nilsson Busbey, Austin Charles Busbey Noah Edwin Bresnahan Busbey,  one great-granddaughter Lilly Ann Busbey and his brother C. Robert Busbey.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2010 at 10 a.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home with Pastor Emet Huntsman officiating.
Military graveside services will be held on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, TX.
Col. Busbey asked that in lieu of flowers contributions be sent to the Gladys Porter Zoo Endowment Fund, 500 Ringgold St., Brownsville, TX 78520.
Arthur Busbey will be dearly missed by his friends, associates at the zoo and most deeply by his children and family.
