Armella J. White

Armella J. White went home to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, March 4, 2011, she was 94 years old.  She was preceded in death by her husband C.S. “Chic” White and her daughter Jerry Lynn Koppel.  She is survived by her daughter Patty (Marty) Withington of McAllen, TX; her son Doug White of Naples, FL, her grandchildren Kellie Koppel of Los Angeles, CA; Shawn (Joe) Patterson of Mission, TX and Jeffery (Vanessa) Withington of McAllen, TX and five great-grandchildren, Will, Beth and Tucker Patterson and Skyler and Emily Withington.
Armella was born December 3, 1916 in Corpus Christi, TX to Clarence and Ethel (Darby) Jefferds.  She graduated from high school in Kingsville and went on to study kinesiology at Texas A&I when she met and later married Chic White, who was a Yell Leader at Texas A&M University.  They were married for 48 years and had a wonderful life together in Harlingen where they enjoyed golfing, dancing and traveling the world.  They were Charter Members of the Harlingen Country Club and Co-Founders of the Life Begins at 40 Golf Tournament.  Armella was the Ladies Golf Champion of the Club in 1971 and 1972 and the only woman to be named “Honorary Director” of the Life Begins at 40 Golf Tournament.  This was the first year she was unable to attend the festivities of the Tournament since its’ founding in 1953.  She was known for being a great golfer; which she played into her 90’s, a savvy bridge partner, and a wonderful joke teller, with a sharp wit and great sense of humor.  She was a member of First Baptist Church of McAllen.
Visitation with the family present will be Wednesday morning from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home located at 710 Ed Carey in Harlingen.  Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to Shriners Hospital for Children - Houston or Gideons International.
The family wishes to extent their deepest and sincere thanks to Diana, Sylvia and Chrystal Melgoza for their loving kindness, care, comfort and compassion extended to our “Mimi” during her last months with us.
