Anna Lee Wooten
SAN ANGELO, TX:
Anna Lee Wooten went home to her Lord, Wednesday in San Angelo, Texas.
Anna Lee was born November 26, 1927 in Ocoee, Tennessee. She was the third child of Bill J. and Bertha Lewis.
Anna Lee graduated from Bradley Central High School in 1945 in Bradley County, TN. The previous year, she applied for and was accepted as a Bell System operator. It was a job that would last over 40 years.
She met Chester R. Wooten in 1947 and they were married in 1948. Shortly thereafter, they moved to the Rio Grande valley finally settling in Harlingen, TX. They were married 47 years until his passing in 1995.
Her career with the Bell system began as an operator and the saying, “number please” and “may I help you”, was heard by many in the early days of Bell System operations. Late in her career when automation did away with operators, she was able to transfer to plant operations and one the first women to do so. Retraining did not come easy but she overcame and was a valued member of the engineering team. She was a member of the Telecom Pioneers and enjoyed the yearly Pioneer picnics at Pendleton Park in her retirement.
Always devout in her faith, she was a member of the Second Baptist Church.
Anna Lee is survived by her three children, James G. Wooten (Gail), Raymond L. Wooten (Patti) and Kenneth B. Wooten. Grandchildren include, Stephanie Davis, Cindy King, Michael Diaz, Katherine Pankey, James A. and Adam L. Wooten. Great grandchildren include, Bradley, Tayler, Kelsie, Raegan, Nathaniel and Sarah.
The family wishes to thank Baptist Memorials, Legend Oaks and Hospice of San Angelo in Anna Lee’s care.
