Alton Garner O’Keeffe, 81, passed away Thursday, January 27, 2011.
Al was born August 20, 1929 in Pandora, TX. Al graduated from Harlingen High School in 1947 and then joined the U.S. Navy where he served from 1948 to 1952. He served honorably during the Korean Conflict where he was awarded the Purple Heart. He then attended and graduated from Texas Southmost College in 1956 and Pan American University in 1958.
After graduation Al was employed with the La Feria Independent School District from 1958 until 1989. He was a past Grand Master of the Masonic Lodge in La Feria, member of the American Legion Post 439, American Red Brangus Association and the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. He also was a member of the First Baptist Church in La Feria where he served as a Deacon and enjoyed singing in the choir.
Al is survived by his wife, Mary Alice O’Keeffe, daughters, Tracy and husband, Kyle Gleghorn and Perri and husband, Dan D’Armond; grandchildren, Krista Gleghorn, Ensign K. Daniel Gleghorn, Andrew D’Armond and Katelyn D’Armond; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alton B. and Pauline G. O’Keeffe and brother, Wayne O’Keeffe.
Visitation hours will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home, Monday, January 31, 2011 from 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with the family receiving friends from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
Graveside services only will be held at the La Feria Cemetery, Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at 10:00 AM with the Rev. Jerry Johnson officiating.
Serving as pallbearers will be Kyle Gleghorn, Dan D’Armond, Ensign K. Daniel Gleghorn, Andrew D’Armond, Don Power, and Jim Gamble. Serving as an Honorary Pallbearer will be Johnnie Johnson.
