Adele J. Huff

Adele J. Huff went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on November 19, 2010, at the age of 96 years.
Adele was born in Austin, Texas, on November 14, 1914, to Charles and Lee Gilmore Johnson. Adele’s mother, Lee Johnson, died in 1919, leaving Adele and sister, Lois, to be reared by a loving aunt, Ophelia Gilmore.  Adele was a long-time resident of the Rio Grande Valley, residing in Raymondville and Harlingen, Texas.  Born and reared in Austin, Texas, Adele was educated in the Austin Public Schools, and received a degree from the University of Texas in 1936.  Adele went to San Benito, Texas in the Rio Grande Valley for her first teaching assignment. Later, she taught home economics and English in the Raymondville Public Schools.  While in Raymondville, She met her husband, Calvin Ralph Huff, and they married in 1940, and had two daughters.  She resumed her teaching career in 1959 teaching for 19 years.  After retirement from teaching, she left Raymondville in 1988, moving to Camelot Retirement Village in Harlingen.  During her years at Camelot, Adele made many wonderful friends, including her dear friend Dr. Jack Fritchey.
Adele was a life-long member of the Methodist Church, first in Austin, then Raymondville, and last in Harlingen.  She was a member of the UMW, Sunday school teacher, MYF sponsor, and member of the Board of Stewards in Raymondville.  During Adele’s lifetime, she was President of the Raymondville Women’s Club, Charter member of the Lane Star Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, member of: the National Retired Teachers’ Association, the Magic Valley Bridge Association, the Raymondville Historical Society, and Chaplain Leo McDonald’s Ladies’ Bible Study Class.
In addition to her parents and aunt, she was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband, Calvin, who passed away in 1973, her sister Lois White, and dear friend, Dr. Jack Fritchey.  Survivors include her daughters, Martha Kaye Fenn and husband Bill, Janice Huff Smith and husband, Don all of San Antonio; sister, Charlye Beth Combs of Houston; grandchildren: Terri Fenn Chatham (Robert), Traci Fenn Abbott (Kenneth), Jennifer Kaye Smith, Lisa Smith Kuglen (Jeff), Kelly Jo Parr (Paul), Marcia Smith Prechel (Mike), Mark Christopher Fenn; twelve great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, and three nephews.
Adele devoted her life to her God, her family, and her church.  She will always be remembered as a caring and generous mother and grandmother.  In her later years, Adele had four wonderful care-givers that she loved dearly: Janie, Diane, San Juanita, and Dalia.
Visitation will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 23, 2010 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the First United Methodist Church of Harlingen, on Wednesday, November 24, 2010, at 1 p.m. with Rev. David Payne officiating.  Interment will follow at the Raymondville Memorial Cemetery in Raymondville, Texas.
Pallbearers are: Mark Fenn, Jeff Kuglen, Mike Perchel, Raymond Grace, Keith Burns, and Richard Burns.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in her name to the First United Methodist Church of Harlingen, 321 E. Harrison, Harlingen, Texas 78550.
