Adela G. Barrerra
September 9, 1931 — July 4, 2017
Los Fresnos - Adela Gonzales Barrera, passed peacefully from this life on the morning of July 4th after a gradual decline in her health. She was surrounded and comforted by her loving family and caregivers the last days of her life.
Adela was born September 9, 1931, in San Benito, TX. She graduated from Los Fresnos High School in 1950, but remained a Falcon her entire life. In 1950, she married Ramiro B. Barrera and they began their life together in Port Isabel, TX. During their marriage, they had three children. She started her career as a lay teacher at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic School, and then transferred to the public school system with the Brownville Independent School District. She worked with Special Education and later transferred to Pace High School. She briefly came out of retirement and worked at International Educational Services in Los Fresnos, TX.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ramon and Estella Gonzales, her husband Ramiro B. Barrera, and her siblings Teresita, Beatriz, Berta, Roberto, Lillie and Connie.
She is survived by her children, Ramiro R. (Linda) Barrera of Bayview TX., Belinda Barrera (Ronald) Woodard of Fresno, CA, Ronaldo (Martha) Barrera of San Benito, TX., her brothers Ramon Gonzales Jr. of Helotes, TX and Manuel (Norma) Gonzales of Buda, TX., ten grandchildren Adela Duncan, Andres Garcia, Corina Simpson, Ron Barrera Jr., Melinda Singh, Ruben Barrera, Margarita Garcia, Ryan Barrera, Kevin Barrera and Samantha King, 20 great-grandchildren, as well as many loving family, in- laws, cousins, nephews, nieces and dear friends.
Visitation will be today, July 7, 2017, 5:00-9:00 p.m. with a recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at San Benito Funeral Home, Chapel B. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated tomorrow, July 8, 2017, at 6:15 p.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Los Fresnos. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park, San Benito.
